1982 Mercury begins measuring engine horsepower at the propeller, and 140hp becomes 115hp (there are some other minor differences too). Mercury 115 hp engines with serial numbers more than 5829464 are rated at the propeller. In 1984, a new power trim unit was introduced, which was integrated and utilized on V6 engines. This new power train included hydraulic valves in addition to mechanical ones. The result was improved performance and fuel economy. The hydraulic valve system provides greater control of engine torque at low speeds when gas mileage is important.
These are only the major changes for 1982; there were many others under the hood and in the body shop. For example, headlight covers became standard equipment for the first time ever. Also for the first time, Corvettes had them! They looked great and helped reduce glare from the street into the headlights at night. Other changes included an upgraded suspension with larger tires and better quality parts, along with aluminum instead of steel rims. Inside, bucket seats were replaced by vinyl benches for the first time. A padded dashboard added convenience while keeping drivers safe from impact with hard objects should they hit a curb or another car hard.
The heart of any Corvette is its legendary V8 engine.
Arch, grin. The late model (ca. 1976-1977) The Merc 1500s had power-ported pistons and radical timing, which increased horsepower above the 1150 engines. Aside from that, they were fairly similar in appearance. The previous 135HP versions got their power bump in various ways.

The 1968 125 HP 1250 was the first 99.x cubic inch inline6, and following the 1969 model year, all of them were 99.x cubic inches, from the 90HP 900 to the 150HP 1500.

The serial number of your Mercury outboard is the sequence of letters and digits (or just numbers) at the top of the identification tag or instruction plate. On later Mercury outboards, the tag or plate will additionally include the year of production of the engine underneath the serial number. Yours has this date, 1947, printed in red ink.
All Mercury outboard motors were built with three-cylinder engines until 1961, when they were updated to use four cylinders. Your motor has 481cc's worth of air-cooled engine enclosed in a fiberglass shell. It uses an OHV design with two valves per cylinder. It has a bore of 50mm and a stroke of 80mm. That gives it a total displacement of 384cc.
This model was produced from 1947 to 1962. A five-year warranty is included with the boat, which has a value of about $500 today. The dealer package includes a one-year limited warranty on all components other than the engine itself.
Mercedes-Benz made small gasoline engines under the name "Mercury" from 1907 to 1915. In 1907, Mercedes added an overhead valve system to its 3-liter 6-cylinder engine for use in his new luxury car. This is the same system that would be used in every 3-cylinder Mercedes engine through 1915.
