As a result, about every 2,150 years, the sun's position in front of the background stars—at the time of the March, or vernal, equinox—moves in front of a new zodiacal constellation. The Age of Aquarius begins when the sun no longer passes in front of the constellation Pisces during the March equinox. Instead, it will have moved on to form a new constellation with Aries.
The last age of Pisces began around 593 B.C., and since then there have been two more ages of Pisces. Now we are entering an age of Aquarius. The next age of constellations will begin when the sun moves out of Aquarius and enters Piscus (Fish) in late February 2024.
Aquarius is the first sign of the zodiac that rises as the earth rotates from west to east across the celestial sphere. It is a water sign that represents the airy spirit Aquarius who is free-thinking and original. In mythology Aquarius was one of the four sons of Pallas Athena who were assigned the four corners of the earth to watch over. This role made them equivalent to the Roman gods Quirinus, Vulcan, and Mars.
Aquarius is represented by the fish swimming in opposite directions because they are free-thinking and original people who want to see things differently without being attached to what others think.
Aquarius is one of the earliest recognized constellations of the Zodiac (the apparent path of the Sun). It was one among the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy in the second century, and it is now one of the 88 contemporary constellations. Aquarius is called "the Water Bearer" in English literature.
Aquarius is a water bearer on account of the presence of a single star (Arius) that marks its center. The name "Aquarius" is derived from a Latin word meaning "water carrier". The appearance of this constellation is that of a large fish with its back toward the zenith and its mouth open wide to receive the sun at dawn and dusk.
The Astronomer's Guide to Constellations describes Aquarius as a "large constellation located between Pisces and Capricorn. It has been called 'the Fish' because it is shaped like a fish with its head down towards the horizon.' Aries also lies within this constellation but there is no direct connection between them; instead they are separated by empty space."
Aquarius is visible all night long and does not disappear for several months each year when it is submerged under water. Thus, it has been said that this constellation is always watching over us.
Its symbol is the water pitcher or beaker, which represents forgiveness and humility.
Aquarius dates range from January 20 through February 19. If you were born between these dates, your sun sign is Aquarius, because that is the Zodiac sign where the sun was on the day you were born. Aquarius is best viewed in the evening sky around fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located approximately to the east of Capricornus, another zodiacal constellation. You may also utilize the Great Square of Pegasus to point you in the direction of Aquarius. It is worth noting that there are two different constellations named Aquarius: one is part of the Water Bear family and resides within 250 million years of age; the other is a modern constellation that emerged about 150 years ago.
Aquarius is represented by the water bearer, who is shown with a pitcher on his shoulder. This symbolizes hope for humanity as well as life-giving water. According to myth, the water bearer was given the ability to speak by Zeus in order to ask for a reward for delivering the river Oceanus. The god allowed him to choose any thing he wanted as a reward, so the water bearer asked for all mankind.
Modern scholars believe that this constellation was probably based on the Cetus, a sea monster that resided in the waters near where Aquarius now stands. Since its creation, Aquarius has undergone several changes. In the early days of celestial navigation, sailors used it as a guide to find directions at sea. Later, it became associated with air travel and astronauts, since both need clear skies to fly or walk on the moon. Today, Aquarius is known for its association with free thinkers and anarchists.
